I was in a union when I worked at a hospital in Toledo. I am not sure if it was just the nature of our work (caring for people) but there wasn't a mentality of being able to slack off just because we were in a union. The only benefit we got from being in a union was having legal representation should we need it in the work environment. We also got extra vacation time for working on holidays, but there wasn't any attitude that we could screw up and still keep our jobs. I'm assuming it is different in factory work, but I don't know.
