The most important aspect that many musicians/bands forget is that in order for your music to be popular the masses must relate to the music on an emotional level. They must have some kind of connection to the music other than just the music itself.

A couple examples:
1. Image: With image you are selling a life style. A life style your audience will hopefully want and thus create a stronger connection to the music associated with that lifestyle.

2. Have you every had a significant other in which the two of you had a favorite song together? Think about the impact this song had on you and how you feel about it now. The song has the power it elicit some very intense emotional responses based upon the feelings you have for this other person.

It may be positive, it may be negative, but what ever it is it's the most important aspect of music and popularity. If you are asking yourself "My music is just as good as other bands that are generating millions, why is mine not doing the same?" It's because you are focusing to much on the music and not paying attention to the connection you need to be making with the masses.
