Post Keys to Victory: Browns/Dolphins

Well gang, the Browns are back home after an impressive victory over the Indianapolis Colts. A lot of people are deriding the Browns for the win, saying it was over a poor Colts team reeling without their star quarterback. However, keep in mind first of all that it was on the road, in one of the absolute loudest places to play in sports. The Colts play in a dome, and the fans were cheering louder than ever trying to give the Colts an extra edge that they normally have not needed in years past. Either way, a win is a win is a win, and the Browns won. Now it's back in front of a re-energized home crowd to play the Miami Dolphins. Here are the Browns' keys to victory:

1.) Exploit the right side of the Dolphins' offensive line: The Dolphins have a stud LT in Jake Long, who many experts believe is neck and neck with our own Joe Thomas for the best in the game. He is massive and fast, and Jayme Mitchell will have his hands full. They also have a seasoned veteran in Richie Incognito next to him at LG. However, the middle and right side of the Dolphins' O-Line is more susceptible to penetration, with an aging Marc Columbo and Vernon Carey at RT and RG, respectively, and the promising rookie Mike Pouncey at C. Keep in mind that Pouncey is the twin brother of Steelers All-Pro center Marquise Pouncey, and there is a reason that one came out a year earlier than the other. The Browns may find some openings for their big men up front to be disruptive, and they need to pounce on Pouncey!

2.) Stay away from Vontae: Miami has a solid defense, but they do have a secondary that can be exploited. Led by lockdown corner Vontae Davis, other members of the secondary have been suspect so far this season. A vertical passing game utilizing tight ends Evan Moore and Ben Watson, especially attacking the safeties, could be quite effective. A wide receiver for the Browns, Massaquoi perhaps, may have to act as a decoy to keep Davis occupied while others are able to make plays downfield.

3.) Keep Colt upright: We saw what happened when Colt McCoy was able to stay on his feet and make plays. The Dolphins' pass rush, led by former CFL Defensive MVP Cameron Wake, will be gunning for him from the opening whistle. Wake vs. Joe Thomas should be a wash, so the hope is the rest of the Browns' O-Line can give McCoy time to get things done.

Final score: I had a bad feeling about the first game and they lost, a good feeling about the second game and they won. I feel pretty good about this one. Plus, I'll be at the game. Let's see some offensive fireworks! Browns 28-10. Game MVP: Ben Watson with 8 catches and a score.

We need to attack their weak secondary.

Pounce on Pouncey!
Let's see how Chad Henne does against T.J. Ward & Joe Haden. Our D-line is getting better each week as Phil Taylor learns the NFL game & this could be a good game for D'Quell Jackson.
Peyton Hillis has an undisclosed illness (as of Friday), and maybe it's time to get Montario Hardesty some reps earlier in the game.
I think Colt McCoy is going to have his best game as a pro, and I see the Browns winning 35-17.

Interestingly enough, all three of the keys to victory versus the Dolphins proved true, just not all necessarily in the way I wanted them to.

1.) They did an excellent job rushing the passer, but not just from the left side of the D-Line. Jayme Mitchell had a good game versus Jake Long too. The defense was in the backfield all game, and if not for a facemask penalty by Sheard on third and long at the five yard line, the pass rush would have received a perfect grade. Still giving up too many running yards, though. This could become a problem.

2.) Two reasons this one worked: One, because they barely threw to their wide receivers (echoes of Mangini, anyone?) Second, because Davis didn't even play! What should have been a huge advantage for the passing game was minimal at best, until the final drive of the game.

3.) They did do an excellent job of keeping Colt upright, although he was hurried consistently. They gave up zero sacks, which should have been indicative of an excellent passing day. However, it was not the case, once again, until the final drive of the game, which was the only beginning to end impressive drive.

All in all, it was a pretty boring game until the end, which ultimately is all that counts. No one in that stadium had a lot of faith that the Browns could get that touchdown with less than a minute to play. Then, the two fifteen yard penalties that gave the Dolphins excellent field position to win with a field goal was as nerve-racking, same-old-Browns dramatic as it gets. The defense won this game, and definitely deserves major kudos. Next up is the Titans, and I'll be back with more later this week.

Well Brandon, the Browns defense is causing turnovers, and sacking the quarterback. This accumulates by the end of 4 quarters, and plays a role in Chad Henne rushing and throwing his interception to seal the game for the Browns. It's also tough to throw the ball when the monster known as Joe Haden is covering the best receiver on the other team like glue. This all leads to a good overall game by the Browns who are now 2-1!
Yes, I agree, there were 2 good passing plays to our receivers Josh Cribbs (TD) and MoMass (TD), and the last drive looked o.k. (remember Schottenheimer's famous prevent us from winning defense). Overall, the passing game didn't really get going, and I'm not sure what the reason is. We need to keep airing it out to give our backs some room to run. I say with Hillis active, the plan should be to run enough to draw the linebackers in so that we can throw. With Hillis inactive, we need to pass, to loosen up the run coverage. We'll see how this progresses over the next few weeks.
Yeah, those 2 15 yard penalties were garbage. It was feeling like the Browns had found yet another new way to lose a game at the last second. I guess that's the difference between having pedestrian quarterbacks leading a last minute drive, and Colt McCoy. Colt won more games in college at QB than any other person in college football history. The guy knows how to win.
I am CONVINCED, even with his lousy game, that Colt McCoy could lead a good team to a Super Bowl win. Can he do it all by himself??? Of course not. But I know a "Gamer" when I see one, and that 3 minute drive to win the game was great.
Now,...let's focus on Tennessee shall we???
